The Longest Winning Streak in Blackjack, and How Rare 10 in a Row Really Is

By the BlackJack Streak team · · 7 min read

A winning streak is the best feeling at a blackjack table: the dealer busts, you double and hit, your stack keeps growing, and you start to believe it will never end. How long can it actually go? Nobody keeps an official record for blackjack, so we measured it with 10 million rounds of perfect play through the engine that deals every hand at BlackJack Streak. The answer is shorter than the stories, and the reasons are worth knowing.

Is there a record for the longest blackjack winning streak?

Not an official one. No casino or record book publishes the most blackjack hands won in a row, and there's no way to verify the tales people tell.

The famous gambling streak record isn't a blackjack record at all. Guinness World Records lists Archie Karas for the "largest winning streak": he arrived in Las Vegas in December 1992 with $50 and had built it to $40 million by early 1995, playing pool, poker and dice. By mid-1995 he had lost all of it, much of it at dice and baccarat. That record is about money over years, not hands in a row, and it ended the way long gambling runs usually do.

So for blackjack, we counted.

What 10 million rounds showed

We played 10 million rounds at BlackJack Streak's default rules (six decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, late surrender, blackjack pays 3 to 2), with every decision made by perfect basic strategy. A round is won or lost by its total result, and a push ends the streak.

We also ran 40 million rounds at the same rules. The best winning streak in that run was 19 in a row, while the worst losing streak reached 27. Even at four times the volume, the best runs stay well short of the worst ones.

The longest run of wins was 16 rounds in a row, and only five streaks reached 16. Here is how often the long ones came up:

How rare is winning 10 hands in a row?

Rarer than most players think. From any hand you're about to play, the chance that it starts a run of 10 straight wins is about 1 in 5,350. Over a whole session your odds improve, simply because you get more chances to start one:

Session lengthChance of a winning streak of at least…Typical longest winning streak
100 rounds5: 54.9% · 7: 12.7% · 10: 1.0%About 5
1,000 rounds7: 75.9% · 8: 45.1% · 10: 10.1%About 7
10,000 rounds10: 65.9% · 12: 17.6% · 15: 1.5%About 10

So a ten-hand heater is a once-in-a-long-while event: about a 1% chance in an evening of 100 rounds, about 10% over a thousand. If it happens to you, enjoy it. It's genuinely uncommon.

Why winning streaks are shorter than losing streaks

Even with perfect strategy you win about 42.4% of rounds and lose about 49.1%; the rest are pushes. Blackjack evens the money out in other ways, mostly the 3 to 2 payout on a blackjack and the extra winnings on doubles, but it never lets you win more often than you lose.

That gap compounds fast. Ten wins in a row from a given hand is about 1 in 5,350; ten losses in a row is about 1 in 1,225. Across the same 10 million rounds, the longest losing streak was 20, four longer than the best winning one. The hot hand and the gambler's fallacy

Two beliefs show up at every table, and they point in opposite directions:

Both are wrong in the way that matters to you. Whether you won the last hand tells you essentially nothing about the next one. A six-deck shoe does change slightly as cards come out, and that's exactly what card counters track (see can you count cards online?), but the change comes from which cards were dealt, not from whether you happened to win. Your streak is a description of the past, not a forecast. The same goes at BlackJack Streak, where every shoe is shuffled before it's dealt and sealed with a fingerprint you can check afterwards on our provably fair blackjack page.

That's also why raising your bets because you're "hot" doesn't help. Bigger bets during a streak just mean bigger losses when it ends, and from our tables above, it ends soon: a typical evening's best streak is about five.

Streaks at BlackJack Streak

BlackJack Streak is named for this feeling, so it tracks it. Your stats panel shows your Best win streak, and two badges reward the good runs:

Badges come with a free account (email only), which also keeps your stats and tops your chips back up to 500,000 when you run low. One detail works in your favor: in the game, a push leaves your streak where it was instead of ending it, so a win, a push and a win still count as two in a row. Our numbers above count pushes as streak-breakers, so your real chances of a badge are a little better than the tables say.

And Frank notices. Once you've won three in a row, he usually has something to say about it:

“That’s 4 in a row! You’re on fire! Somebody call the fire department. Actually, don’t.”
“You’re on a heater, partner! 6 straight.”
“7 wins straight. I’m starting to sweat.”

He fills in your actual count. Turn the sound on with the speaker button at the top to hear him, or switch on Captions in Settings to read his lines. More of his material is in the funniest blackjack game online.

What to do on a heater

Keep your bet size steady, keep playing the basic strategy chart, and enjoy it. A streak doesn’t change the odds of the next hand, so the right play on win number nine is the same as on hand one.

The bottom line

There's no official record for the longest winning streak in blackjack. In 10 million rounds of perfect play, the best we saw was 16 in a row (19 in a separate 40-million-round run), and ten straight wins came up about once every 9,700 rounds. Winning streaks run shorter than losing streaks because you lose more rounds than you win, even when you play every hand right. That's the house edge at work, explained number by number in our guide to blackjack odds and the house edge. Want to see what your own best run looks like? Questions people ask

What is the longest winning streak in blackjack?

There is no official blackjack record. In 10 million rounds of perfect basic strategy played through the BlackJack Streak rules engine, the longest winning streak was 16 rounds in a row, and only five streaks reached that length. In a separate 40-million-round run, the best was 19.

How rare is it to win 10 hands in a row in blackjack?

From any given hand, about 1 in 5,350. Over a 100-round session the chance of at least one 10-win streak is about 1%, and over 1,000 rounds about 10%.

What are the odds of winning 5 hands in a row in blackjack?

Over a 100-round session of perfect play there is about a 55% chance of at least one winning streak of five or more. At BlackJack Streak that streak earns the Hot Streak badge.

Are winning streaks in blackjack real?

Streaks happen in any fair game, but they do not predict the next hand. Whether you won the last hand tells you essentially nothing about the next one, so the right play stays the same during a streak.

Should you increase your bet during a winning streak?

No. A streak does not make the next hand more likely to win, so raising your bet only makes the loss bigger when the streak ends. Keep your bet size steady and keep playing basic strategy. With free chips at BlackJack Streak you can see this for yourself without risking anything.
