Blackjack vs other games
Blackjack vs Teen Patti: Two Card Games, Two Very Different Nights
In much of India, the card game everyone already knows is teen patti. Blackjack is the one people meet later, on a trip to Goa, in a film, or online. Both are quick to learn and both are best with a crowd, but they ask completely different things of you. Teen patti is about nerve and reading people. Blackjack is about knowing the right play. Here is how they compare, and how to enjoy either one without money changing hands, from the team behind BlackJack Streak.
The big difference: who you are playing against
Teen patti is played against the other people at the table. Everyone puts money or chips into a shared pot, and the best hand (or the last player left after everyone else folds) takes it. That makes it a cousin of poker: it grew out of the English game three-card brag, with poker's influence along the way, and in some places it is simply called flush or flash.
Blackjack is played against the dealer. Everyone at the table can win the same round, because nobody is taking chips from anyone else. You're all trying to beat the same opponent, who follows fixed rules and never bluffs.
So teen patti turns your friends into rivals for the evening. Blackjack puts everyone on the same side.
How teen patti works, in brief
- The boot. Before the deal, a starting stake called the boot goes into the pot.
- The deal. Everyone gets three cards face down from a standard 52-card deck. A table can seat up to about ten players.
- Blind or seen. You can bet without looking at your cards (playing blind) or look first (playing seen). Seen players have to bet more: typically at least twice what a blind player puts in.
- Chaal. Players take turns matching or raising the current bet, or packing (folding).
- Show and sideshow. When only two players are left, one can ask for a show and the higher hand wins. Before that, a seen player can ask the previous player for a private sideshow to compare hands, and the lower hand folds.
House rules vary a lot from family to family, especially around the exact betting amounts and when a sideshow is allowed, so agree on them before the first deal.
Teen patti hand rankings, and how rare each one is
From highest to lowest. The numbers are the exact counts out of the 22,100 possible three-card hands from one deck, with the usual rule that A-2-3 counts as a sequence.
| Hand | What it is | Ways to make it | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail (trio, set) | Three of a kind | 52 | 0.24% |
| Pure sequence | Three in a row, same suit | 48 | 0.22% |
| Sequence (run) | Three in a row, mixed suits | 720 | 3.26% |
| Color | Three of the same suit, not in a row | 1,096 | 4.96% |
| Pair | Two of the same rank | 3,744 | 16.94% |
| High card | None of the above | 16,440 | 74.39% |
Two things surprise poker players. First, a sequence beats a color in teen patti, the reverse of poker, because with only three cards a run is rarer than a flush. Second, a trail outranks a pure sequence even though a pure sequence is very slightly rarer. Tradition wins over arithmetic.
How blackjack works, in brief
You and the dealer each get two cards; one of the dealer's is face down. Cards count at face value, face cards are worth 10, and an ace is 1 or 11. You try to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over, choosing to hit, stand, double, split or surrender as you go. Then the dealer plays by fixed rules: hit on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more. A blackjack (an ace with a ten-value card) pays 3 to 2. The full walk-through is in how to play blackjack.
Teen patti vs blackjack, side by side
| Teen patti | Blackjack | |
|---|---|---|
| Opponents | The other players | The dealer |
| Cards | Three each, no drawing | Two to start, draw as many as you like |
| Bluffing | The heart of the game | None: the dealer plays by fixed rules |
| Key skill | Reading people, nerve, when to pack | Knowing the best play for each hand |
| Is there a "correct" play? | Depends on the people at the table | Yes, basic strategy, on one chart |
| Players | Usually 3 or more, up to about 10 | Works with one player; BlackJack Streak seats up to five |
| Can everyone win the same round? | No, one pot, one winner | Yes |
If you like teen patti's bluffing, you'll probably also enjoy poker; we compare that in blackjack vs poker. If you like games where math decides the best move, blackjack is your game, and our basic strategy chart shows it.
Which is easier to learn?
Both rule sets fit on a page. Teen patti's rankings are the first hurdle for newcomers, and its betting conventions (blind, seen, chaal, show, sideshow) take a round or two to settle. Blackjack's rules are even simpler, but playing it well means learning a strategy chart.
The real difference is what "getting good" means. In blackjack, getting good means making the mathematically right choice every time; you can learn that alone. In teen patti, getting good means reading your family better than they read you; you can only learn that at the table.
Diwali card nights
For many families in north India, card parties fill the weeks around Diwali, and teen patti is the usual game. The tradition is often traced to a legend in which the goddess Parvati played dice with Lord Shiva on Diwali night and declared that whoever played on that night would prosper in the year ahead. Over time, the dice gave way to cards.
Those evenings usually involve stakes, from token amounts to much more. If you'd like the card night without the money, blackjack is an easy addition: everyone sits on the same side against the dealer, so the cousin who has never played can sit next to the uncle who has, and nobody is out of pocket at the end.
With BlackJack Streak, the family doesn't even need to be in the same city. One person starts a free table and sends the link on WhatsApp; up to four others join from their own phones. Everyone gets their own 5 lakh play chips and plays against Frank, our dealer. Our guide to hosting a blackjack game night has ideas for friendly contests.

What India's online gaming law means for both games
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 has been in force since 1 May 2026. It bans online money games across India: any game where you pay or stake money hoping to win money, whatever the game is called. That covers real-money online teen patti and real-money online blackjack alike, along with their ads and payment processing.
The same Act promotes online social games, which are played without money. A free game with chips that can't be bought, sold or cashed out sits on that side of the line. That's how BlackJack Streak works: no deposits, no UPI, no chips for sale and no prizes. Good to know
BlackJack Streak deals blackjack only; it doesn't offer teen patti or any other game. If you want to play teen patti at home, a real deck and a table of friends is still the best way, with or without the matchsticks.
So which should you play?
- Teen patti if your group loves bluffing, banter and outlasting each other.
- Blackjack if you want everyone on the same team, a game you can play alone too, and a skill you can actually study.
- Both, on a long Diwali night. Just keep the money out of it.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between blackjack and teen patti?
In teen patti you play against the other players for a shared pot, with three cards each and plenty of bluffing. In blackjack you play against the dealer, draw cards to get close to 21, and follow a known best strategy. Everyone at a blackjack table can win the same round.
Is teen patti like poker?
Yes. Teen patti grew out of the English game three-card brag and was influenced by poker. Like poker, it is played against other players with betting and bluffing, but with three cards and its own hand rankings.
Which is higher in teen patti, a sequence or a color?
A sequence beats a color. With only three cards, a run is rarer than three of the same suit, so the ranking is the reverse of poker.
Is it legal to play teen patti or blackjack online in India?
Not for real money. Since 1 May 2026, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 bans online money games in India. Free games with no money involved, like BlackJack Streak, sit on the social-game side of the law. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I play blackjack with family online for Diwali?
Yes. BlackJack Streak lets one person start a free table and invite up to four others with a link. Everyone plays on their own phone or computer with 500,000 free play chips, and no money is involved.
