Can You Count Cards Online? How Counting Works, and Where to Practice It Free

By the BlackJack Streak team · · 7 min read

Card counting is the one legal way to turn blackjack in the player's favor, and it only works when cards are dealt from a shoe that isn't reshuffled every hand. Most online blackjack is reshuffled every hand. BlackJack Streak isn't. Here's how counting works, why it fails in most online games, and how to practice it on a real shoe for free.

The short answer

You can count cards online only when the game deals from a shoe and keeps dealing until a cut card, the way a casino table does. Many online blackjack games shuffle a fresh virtual deck before every hand, which resets the count to zero each time and makes counting useless.

BlackJack Streak deals from a real six-deck shoe and reshuffles only when the cut card comes out, 75% of the way through. Every card dealt changes what's left, so the count means something. And because the chips are play money, it's the perfect place to learn the skill without risking anything.

Why counting works at all

A shoe with lots of tens and aces left in it is good for the player. Blackjacks come more often (and they pay you 3 to 2, while the dealer's only win even money), doubles land on tens more often, and the dealer, who must hit stiff hands, busts more. A shoe full of small cards is good for the dealer.

Counting is just a way of tracking which kind of shoe you're in. When it's rich in tens and aces, a counter bets more. When it's poor, they bet the minimum.

The Hi-Lo count, step by step

Hi-Lo is the most widely taught counting system, and it's simple enough to learn in an afternoon. Every card gets a value:

CardsCount valueWhy
2, 3, 4, 5, 6+1Small cards leaving the shoe make it better for you
7, 8, 90Neutral
10, J, Q, K, A−1Big cards leaving the shoe make it worse for you

A full deck adds up to exactly zero, so a fresh shoe starts at zero.

1. Keep the running count

Add up the value of every card you see, as it's dealt: yours, the dealer's, and everyone else's at the table. Say a round shows K, 5, 2, 9, A, 6 and 4. That's −1, +1, +1, 0, −1, +1, +1, for a running count of +2. Carry it into the next round, and the next, until the shoe is reshuffled.

2. Convert it to a true count

A running count of +6 means a lot more with one deck left than with five. So counters divide the running count by the number of decks still to be dealt. That's the true count.

At BlackJack Streak you don't have to guess how many decks are left. The tag on the shoe shows exactly how many cards remain, so divide by 52. A running count of +8 with 156 cards left is +8 ÷ 3 decks, a true count of about +2.7.

3. Act on it

The true count tells you two things. First, how much to bet: more when it's high, the minimum when it's low or negative. A common rule of thumb is that each point of true count moves the edge about half a percent toward the player. Second, when to bend basic strategy. The most famous example is insurance.

BlackJack Streak's Fair shuffle panel: the shoe's size, how many cards have been dealt, where the cut card sits, and every card dealt so far, in order.

Insurance: the classic counting play

Insurance pays 2 to 1 when the dealer has a ten under an ace. For that to be worth it, more than a third of the cards left need to be tens. From a fresh six-deck shoe, only 96 of 311 cards are, about 30.9%, so basic strategy says never insure.

A high count changes that. When lots of small cards have gone and the shoe is packed with tens, the odds tip past one in three. The standard Hi-Lo play is to take insurance when the true count is +3 or higher. It's the simplest count-based decision there is, and a good first one to practice.

Frank says

“A guy once asked me if I count cards. I said sure, every night. One, two, three.”

Why counting fails in most online blackjack

Why BlackJack Streak is built for counting practice

None of this was designed for card counters. It falls out of dealing blackjack the honest way, like a real table:

A practice plan that works

  1. Learn the values cold. Before playing, flip through a deck of cards and count it down until you reach zero without thinking.
  2. Count one shoe at Relaxed speed. Set Deal speed to Relaxed in Settings and Frank's chat to Quiet, then keep the running count through a full shoe.
  3. Check yourself. At a random moment, stop and open the Fair shuffle panel. Recount the dealt list and compare it with your number. The dealer's face-down card only appears once it's turned over.
  4. Add the true count. Each round, glance at the cards left on the shoe tag and convert.
  5. Speed up. Move to Normal, then Fast. Counting at speed while also playing perfect basic strategy is the real skill.
  6. Add players. Start a table and invite friends. More hands per round means more cards to track, just like a busy casino table. See playing blackjack with friends.

The honest limits

Card counting is real, but it isn't a money machine. The edge it gives a skilled counter is small, the swings are large, and it takes thousands of hands before skill shows up in results. Losing streaks still happen to counters, all the time. Casinos are private businesses and can ask a counter to stop playing, and many online games are simply impossible to count.

That's exactly why play money is the right place to learn it. At BlackJack Streak the shoe is real, the counting works, and the worst thing that can happen is Frank cracking a joke about your bad run. Before you start, make sure basic strategy is second nature, because counting only adds value on top of it. The odds guide shows what you're up against.

Questions people ask

Can you count cards in online blackjack?

Only in games that deal from a shoe and keep going until a cut card. Many online games reshuffle before every hand, which resets the count. BlackJack Streak deals from a six-deck shoe reshuffled at a 75% cut card, so counting works there.

Is card counting illegal?

Keeping track of cards in your head is not cheating, but casinos are private businesses and can ask counters to stop playing. With play money at BlackJack Streak, there is nobody to ask you to leave.

What is the easiest card counting system?

Hi-Lo. Count 2 through 6 as plus one, 7 through 9 as zero, and tens and aces as minus one, then divide by the decks left to get the true count.

Where can I practice card counting for free?

BlackJack Streak is a free blackjack game that deals from a real six-deck shoe. Its Fair shuffle panel lists every card dealt from the shoe, so you can check your running count, and the shoe shows how many cards are left.

When should you take insurance when counting cards?

With the Hi-Lo count, the standard play is to take insurance when the true count is plus three or higher. Below that, decline it.
