The Longest Losing Streak in Blackjack: What 10 Million Hands Say

By the BlackJack Streak team · · 8 min read

Everyone who plays blackjack long enough has a story about the night nothing worked: eight, ten, twelve hands lost in a row. So what is the longest losing streak in blackjack? There is no official record, so we measured it. We played 10 million rounds of perfect basic strategy through the rules engine that deals every hand at BlackJack Streak, and counted every run of losses. Here is what came out, and what it means for your next bad night.

Is there a world record for losing at blackjack?

No. Nobody keeps an official record of consecutive blackjack hands lost. Casinos don't publish their players' hand histories, and the stories you hear at the bar can't be checked.

Guinness World Records does list a few blackjack records, but they're about the game, not about streaks: the longest blackjack-dealing marathon, for example, is 72 hours, set by Hielke Klingeler in Zuidlaren, the Netherlands, in August 2023. The closest thing to a streak record is Guinness's "largest winning streak" in gambling overall, which we cover in our piece on the longest winning streak in blackjack. For losing, there is nothing.

So instead of a legend, here's a measurement.

What 10 million rounds of perfect play showed

We played 10 million rounds at BlackJack Streak's default rules: six decks, the dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, late surrender, blackjack pays 3 to 2. Every decision followed perfect basic strategy. A round counts as won or lost by its total result, and a push ends a streak.

Then we went bigger: a separate run of 40 million rounds at the same rules. The longest losing streak in that one was 27 rounds in a row. That's the honest answer to "how long can it get?": the more hands you play, the longer the worst run you'll eventually see.

49.1%of rounds lost, even with perfect play

The longest run of losses was 20 rounds in a row. It happened twice. Shorter bad runs were everywhere:

Losing streakTimes it happened in 10 million roundsRoughly how often
10 or more4,176About once every 2,400 rounds
12 or more1,035About once every 9,700 rounds
14 or more251About once every 40,000 rounds
16 or more63About once every 160,000 rounds
18 or more12About once every 830,000 rounds
202About once every 5 million rounds

Put another way: from any hand you're about to play, the chance that it starts a run of 10 straight losses is about 1 in 1,225. The chance it starts a run of 20 is about 1 in 1.5 million. Rare for one hand. Not rare at all over a lifetime of hands.

How long a losing streak to expect in one session

The more you play, the longer your worst run gets. This table shows the chance of at least one losing streak of a given length somewhere in a session of perfect play:

Session lengthChance of a losing streak of at least…Typical longest losing streak
100 rounds (a long evening)5: 78.4% · 6: 51.2% · 7: 28.9% · 8: 15.1% · 10: 3.8%About 6
1,000 rounds (a busy month)8: 82.4% · 9: 57.1% · 10: 33.9% · 12: 9.5% · 15: 1.2%About 9
10,000 rounds (a serious hobby)11: 87.0% · 12: 63.3% · 13: 38.8% · 15: 11.2% · 20: 0.3%About 12

Read the first row again. In a single evening of 100 rounds, you are more likely than not to lose six in a row, and more than three times in four you'll lose at least five. That isn't bad luck. That's blackjack.

Why losing streaks run longer than winning streaks

Blackjack is close to an even game, but not in the way people expect. With perfect strategy you win about 42.4% of rounds and lose about 49.1% (the rest are pushes). The house makes up the difference in your favor with the 3 to 2 blackjack payout and the extra money on doubles, not by letting you win more often.

A gap of under seven points per round sounds small. Compounded over a streak, it's huge. Ten losses in a row from a given hand is about 1 in 1,225. Ten wins in a row is about 1 in 5,350, more than four times rarer. That's why your worst nights feel longer than your best ones: they are.

Does a long losing streak mean the game is rigged?

On its own, no. A fair shuffle produces exactly the runs in the tables above, and a game that never handed you a bad streak would be the suspicious one. Long runs are the most common reason people stop trusting an online blackjack game, which is why we wrote a full guide on how to tell if online blackjack is rigged.

You don't have to take a streak on faith at BlackJack Streak. Every shoe is sealed with a SHA-256 fingerprint before it's dealt, your browser adds its own seed, and when the shoe is retired the Fair shuffle panel reveals the dealer's seed and checks every card you saw against it. The details are on our provably fair blackjack page.

How to ride out a bad run

Size your bets for the streak you'll actually get

If a 10-hand losing streak shows up in a third of 1,000-round stretches, your bankroll should survive one without drama. A simple rule: keep each bet to a small slice of your stack, a twentieth or less, so a normal bad run dents your chips instead of ending your night. Doubles and splits mean some losing rounds cost two bets or more, so leave room.

Don't double your bet to "win it back"

Doubling after every loss (the Martingale system) feels safe because one win recovers everything. Streaks are what break it. Try it at BlackJack Streak with the 500,000 starting chips and a 5,000 base bet: after six straight losses you've put 315,000 on the table, and the seventh bet of 320,000 is more than you have left. A losing streak of six or more happens in about half of all 100-round sessions. The system doesn't change the house edge; it just trades many small wins for an occasional wipeout.

Set a stop before you sit down

Decide in advance how much you're willing to lose in a session and quit when you get there. A losing streak is the worst time to make that decision, because every hand feels like it must be the one that turns it around. It isn't more likely to be. The cards don't remember the last hand.

Keep playing well

Bad runs tempt people into bad plays: standing on 16 against a 10 because hitting "never works tonight", or taking insurance to feel protected. Those plays make the next streak more likely, not less. Our basic strategy chart is the same on a cold night as on a hot one.

What a losing streak looks like at BlackJack Streak

At BlackJack Streak, Frank notices. After three losses in a row he'll often say something, and he keeps it kind:

“Rough patch. The cards don’t hold grudges, and neither do I.”
“Losing streaks end. That’s just math. Hang in there.”
“Hey, these are free chips. Nobody goes home broke from Frank’s table.”

He's right on all three counts. And there's a badge for surviving one: Comeback Kid, for winning a round right after losing five in a row. Badges come with a free account, which also tops your chips back up to 500,000 whenever you run low.

How the streak counts in the game

In our numbers above, a push ends a streak. In the game, a push leaves your streak where it was, so a loss, a push and another loss still count as two in a row. Turn the sound on with the speaker button at the top to hear Frank, or switch on Captions in Settings to read him.

The bottom line

The longest losing streak in blackjack isn't a record anyone holds. It's a number that grows with every hand dealt. In 10 million rounds of perfect play we saw 20 in a row, and in 40 million we saw 27; in a normal evening, expect around six. Knowing that in advance is the best defense against the bad decisions a cold run invites. For the full math behind those numbers, see our guide to blackjack odds and the house edge.

Questions people ask

What is the longest losing streak in blackjack?

There is no official record. In 10 million rounds of perfect basic strategy played through the BlackJack Streak rules engine, the longest losing streak was 20 rounds in a row, and it happened twice. In a separate 40-million-round run, the longest reached 27.

How many hands in a row can you lose at blackjack?

There is no limit, only probabilities. With perfect play you lose about 49% of rounds, so in a 100-round session you have about a 78% chance of losing at least five in a row and a 51% chance of losing six in a row.

How often do you lose 10 hands in a row in blackjack?

In 10 million simulated rounds of perfect play, losing streaks of 10 or more happened about once every 2,400 rounds. Over a 1,000-round stretch, the chance of at least one is about 34%.

Does a long losing streak mean a blackjack game is rigged?

Not by itself. Long losing streaks are a normal part of a fair game. At BlackJack Streak you can check the shuffle yourself in the Fair shuffle panel, which reveals and verifies every shoe after it is played.

Should you raise your bet after losing several hands in a row?

No. The next hand is no more likely to win after a losing streak, and doubling bets to win losses back can wipe out your bankroll when a long streak arrives. Keep bets small relative to your stack and set a stop limit.
