Can You Play Blackjack in India? Free, Online and Legal in 2026

By the BlackJack Streak team · · 6 min read

India changed its online gaming rules in 2026, and a lot of people are now asking a simple question: can I still play blackjack? The answer depends on one thing: whether money is involved. Here is what the law says, what it means for free games like BlackJack Streak, and where real-money blackjack still exists. This is general information, not legal advice.

The short answer

Free blackjack with no money involved: yes. Games where nothing is paid, staked or won sit on the social-game side of India's 2025 online gaming law.

Real-money online blackjack: no. Online money games have been banned across India since the Act came into force on 1 May 2026.

Blackjack in a real casino: only where state law allows it, such as licensed casinos in Goa and Sikkim.

What changed in 2026?

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 is India's first nationwide law for online games. Its rules were notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in April 2026, and the Act came into force on 1 May 2026.

It does three big things:

  1. It bans online money games. These are games where you pay or stake money hoping to win money or other stakes in return. Offering them, advertising them, and processing payments for them are all covered.
  2. It promotes e-sports and online social games. Games played for fun or skill, without money on the line, are something the Act sets out to encourage and recognize.
  3. It creates a regulator. The rules set up the Online Gaming Authority of India to oversee the sector.

What counts as an "online money game"?

The line is about money, not about which game you play. According to published summaries of the 2026 rules, deciding whether a game is a prohibited money game looks at things like:

So "blackjack" on its own isn't the issue. A blackjack app where you deposit rupees and withdraw winnings is a money game. A blackjack game with free play chips that can never be bought, sold or cashed out is a different thing entirely.

So is free online blackjack legal in India?

A free game with no money in, no money out, and chips with no cash value sits on the social-game side of the line the Act draws. That's exactly how BlackJack Streak is built:

Registration under the new rules is required only for categories of games the government notifies, or for games seeking recognition as e-sports. The law is new, though, and how it's applied can develop over time. If you run a gaming business, talk to a lawyer. If you just want to play cards for fun, a game with no money anywhere in it is the simple, safe choice.

What about real-money blackjack apps?

Since 1 May 2026, online money games are banned across India, and blackjack played for real money online falls under that ban. The Act also covers advertising these games and processing payments for them, and banks and payment providers are expected to check a game's status before handling its transactions.

If you still see an app or website offering real-money blackjack to players in India, with deposits, withdrawals or cash prizes, treat that as a warning sign rather than an option.

Can you play blackjack in a real casino in India?

Gambling in the physical world is mostly a matter for each state. The old Public Gambling Act, 1867 and various state laws generally prohibit gambling houses, but some places allow licensed casinos. Land casinos operate legally in places such as Goa and Sikkim, and blackjack is a familiar table there.

Those are real-money casinos with their own entry rules, so check them directly before you go. If you want to learn the game first without losing anything, practice online for free. Our guide on how to play blackjack covers the rules, and the basic strategy chart shows the best play for every hand.

Is the new law being challenged?

Yes. A constitutional challenge to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 has been filed before the Supreme Court of India. Court cases can change how a law applies, so check the current status of that case before relying on any summary, including this one.

The bottom line

Blackjack itself isn't the problem in India. Money is. Real-money online blackjack is off the table since May 2026, and real casinos are limited to the places that license them. A free game like BlackJack Streak, with play chips that can't be bought or cashed out, is a way to enjoy blackjack with no money at stake.
