15 Blackjack Tips for Beginners That Actually Make a Difference

By the BlackJack Streak team · · 7 min read

There is no secret trick that beats blackjack, and anyone selling one is selling something. What does exist is a short list of habits that turn a beginner who gives away chips into a player who makes the house work for its edge. Here are fifteen of them, in the order we'd teach them, with the ways you can practice each one free at BlackJack Streak.

First, the honest answer to "how do I win at blackjack?"

You can win a session. You can win plenty of sessions. But over thousands of hands, the house keeps a small edge, even with perfect play: about 0.38% at BlackJack Streak's default rules. The only legal way to tip that edge the other way is card counting, and even that is a small edge with big swings.

So the realistic goal for a beginner is this: make every decision correctly, so the edge you face is as small as it can be, and enjoy the game. These tips do exactly that.

0.38%house edge with perfect play at the default rules
55%of correctly doubled hands win
78%chance of a 5-loss streak in 100 rounds

The plays

1. Know your soft hands from your hard hands

An ace can be 1 or 11. While it's counted as 11, the hand is soft and can't bust on the next card. A,6 is soft 17, and it plays nothing like a hard 17 (10,7). Beginners who treat every 17 the same give away a lot. If the terms are new, start with how to play blackjack.

2. Learn basic strategy one chart at a time

The full basic strategy chart looks like a wall of letters. Don't swallow it whole. Learn the hard totals first (they're most of your hands), then pairs, then soft totals. A week of short sessions beats one long cram.

3. Always split aces and eights

Two aces are a clumsy 12, but two hands each starting with an ace are strong. Two eights are 16, the worst total in the game, but two hands starting with 8 are fine. Split them every time, whatever the dealer shows.

4. Never split tens or fives

A pair of tens is 20, a hand that wins most of the time. Splitting it trades a near-certain winner for two hands that are each worse. A pair of fives is 10, one of the best hands to double on. Play it as 10.

5. Double your 10s and 11s

Double 11 against every upcard except an ace, and double 10 against 2 through 9. Doubled hands are where a lot of your winnings come from: in our 8-million-round simulation, correctly doubled hands won 55% of the time, and each one pays twice.

6. Let a weak dealer bust

Against a dealer 2 through 6, stand on 13 to 16 (and on 12 against 4, 5 and 6). Those upcards bust often, about 42% of the time for a 6, so you don't need to take the risk yourself.

7. Don't stand on stiff hands against a strong dealer

Against a 7 or higher, hit 12 through 16. It feels wrong, because you'll bust a lot. But the dealer only busts about a quarter of the time with those upcards, so a stiff hand that stands usually loses anyway.

8. Use surrender when it's offered

Surrendering 16 against a 9, 10 or ace, and 15 against a 10, gets half your bet back on hands that lose more than half the time. It isn't giving up. It's the cheapest way out of a bad spot. BlackJack Streak offers late surrender by default.

Frank says

“Live to fight another hand. Smart.”

The bets and the tables

9. Say no to insurance

Insurance looks like protection, but it's a separate bet that the dealer has a ten underneath an ace, and from a full shoe that happens only about 31% of the time. At a 2 to 1 payout, it loses money. Unless you're counting cards, skip it every time. At BlackJack Streak, press N to decline.

10. Read the rules before you sit down

Blackjack paying 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2 costs you about 1.4% of every bet, far more than any strategy mistake. A dealer who hits soft 17 costs about 0.2%. The rules are usually printed on the felt. BlackJack Streak prints its own right there: "Blackjack pays 3 to 2" and "Dealer stands on all 17s".

11. Bet the same amount while you learn

Changing your bet based on how the last few hands went doesn't change the odds of the next one. While you're learning, pick one bet size and keep it. Your results become easier to read, and a bad run can't snowball.

The habits

12. Don't chase losses

Losing streaks are part of blackjack, even with perfect play. In 100 rounds, there's about a 78% chance you'll lose five in a row somewhere, and about a 29% chance you'll lose seven in a row. That's not the deck turning against you. It's ordinary math. Raising your bet to "win it back" just puts more chips into the same odds. If you ever play anywhere with real money, set a limit before you start and stop when you reach it.

Frank says

“Tip from an old-timer: if you ever play somewhere that sells you chips, set a limit and walk away when you hit it. Here, it doesn’t matter. That’s the beauty of it.”

13. Practice with play chips first

Mistakes are cheap when the chips are free. At BlackJack Streak you start with 500,000 play chips, there's nothing to buy, and no real money is ever involved. A free account tops you back up to 500,000 whenever you run low. That makes it the right place to make your beginner mistakes.

14. Drill with the keyboard and a faster deal

Basic strategy has to become automatic, and that takes volume. On a computer, BlackJack Streak is fully playable from the keyboard:

Once the plays feel natural, set Deal speed to Fast in Settings. You'll see far more hands per session.

15. Make the table work for you

A few settings in BlackJack Streak are made for learners:

A simple practice plan

  1. Day one: read the rules and play 50 hands at Relaxed speed, just getting used to the table.
  2. Days two to four: learn the hard totals chart and play a shoe with the chart open beside you.
  3. Days five and six: add pairs and soft hands.
  4. Day seven: play a whole shoe without the chart, then check your hand history for mistakes.

After that, read up on blackjack odds to understand why the plays work, and when you want more company, invite friends to your table.

Questions people ask

What is the best blackjack tip for beginners?

Learn basic strategy. It tells you the best play for every hand and cuts the house edge to about 0.38% at standard six-deck rules. You can practice it free at BlackJack Streak with play chips.

How do you win at blackjack every time?

You can't. Even perfect basic strategy leaves the house a small edge, and losing streaks are normal. The realistic goal is to make every decision correctly and keep the edge as small as possible.

Should beginners take insurance in blackjack?

No. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has a ten under an ace. From a full six-deck shoe that happens only about 31% of the time, and at a 2 to 1 payout it loses money over time.

Where can beginners practice blackjack for free?

BlackJack Streak is a free blackjack game in your browser. You start with 500,000 play chips, the dealer explains each hand, and there is nothing to buy and no real money involved.

How much should a beginner bet in blackjack?

Pick one small bet size and keep it while you learn. Changing bets based on recent results does not change the odds of the next hand, and flat betting makes your results easier to understand.
